Singer-songwriter Lionel Richie got his start in Motown as part of the Commodores, but it's as a solo artist that he really shines. He became one of the most successful male solo artists of the 1980s, earning No. 1 hits starting with his debut in 1982 with "Truly." His other hits include the Caribbean-flavored "All Night Long," "Endless Love" with Diana Ross, "Hello" and "Say You, Say Me," which also won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. Now the five-time Grammy winner is following up a sold-out European run with a North American tour, including a stop at the Honda Center of Anaheim. He'll perform hits from his 30-year discography, beginning with his eponymous 1982 debut and extending through 2012's Tuskegee, a platinum-selling collection that features duets of his hits with a variety of artists. Word on the street is that these concerts tend to become a giant sing-along, so brush up on your lyrics and get ready for some of the greatest ballads the '80s had to offer and much more. Sharing the stage with the five-time Grammy winner will be CeeLo Green. Known for his solo career as well as being a part of the soul duo Gnarls Barkley, Green has recorded numerous hits and is most widely recognized for the chart-topping single "Crazy" and his time as a judge on The Voice. Louis & Keely Live At The Sahara
and The Gerald Wilson Orchestra
Thursday night’s Grand Opening of the 9th Annual Newport Beach Jazz Party will start with the new smash hit musical Louis & Keely Live At The Sahara starring Jake Broder and Vanessa Claire Smith and directed by Jeremy Aldridge. Having won four Ovation Awards, this music-filled tale of Louis, the legendary King of Swingers, and his relationship with Keely, his most famed duetting partner and fourth wife, sold out the Matrix Theatre in Los Angeles night after night! Featuring such favorites as “That Old Black Magic,” “Just a Gigolo,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Autumn Leaves” and more!
From the Las Vegas retro lounge era of Louis & Keely Live At The Sahara, the evening will move to the South Central Ave Jazz period of Los Angeles when the famed Gerald Wilson Orchestra takes the stage, conducted by Mr. Wilson, having recently celebrated his 90th Birthday. Gerald Wilson has received a number of Grammy nominations throughout his career. He is an NEA recipient as a Jazz Master and his works are ensconced in the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. He was honored at the Kennedy Center in March, 2007, along with a number of his peers, as a “Living Legend of Jazz.” Joining this celebrated orchestra will be Eugene “Snooky” Young on trumpet, also a recipient of the NEA Jazz Masters Award and who will celebrate his 90th Birthday on February 3.
This evening is not to be missed by big band jazz fans and those who enjoy reliving the early Las Vegas lounge days in a unique musical theatre setting!
