view more less of this reviewThis was one of the worst outings I have ever had in my life. My boyfriend & I took his three kids, ages 10-16 for what was suppose to be a fun day in Catalina. The three & a half hours on the boat was sheer hell. We did not expect to be in a open fishing boat for that duration. We were there early & snagged one of the few tables. However, it was not enclosed and we were freezing. The boat went only 10 miles per hour & we and the rest of the passengers suffered immensely. Our ten year was sick the entire time & vomited over the table. I vomited over the boat twice. Our sixteen year old also vomited & was in tears most of the time. I saw a couple with two toddlers, freezing the entire time, because there was no warm place to sit. Another family of small children, had the same problems, & their children also vomited. There were trashcans on deck & I watched as two people stood over them & retched. You could hear the sound of people throwing up in the bathrooms. There was probably only a handful of people who did not get sick on that voyage. We got to Catalina at 1:15 after leaving at 9:30 & were told to come back at 2:30 for a 2:45 departure. We knew we could not subject the children to another boatride like that. We ended up having to purchase tickets to the only boat available out at that time, The Catalina Express, for a 2:15 departure. It left for San Pedro - and our car was parked in Newport Beach. We had to pay an additional $129 + tip to rent Super Shuttle to take us to our car in Newport Beach. We ended up spending a boatload of money & had zero enjoyment. We did get to see a few dolphins but it was not worth our entire family getting sick & the whallop to our pocketbook, in the additional purchase of tickets & the supershuttle. I don't recommend this trip for anyone with children, & even most adults got sick. Of the 80 or so people on that boat, probably only a handful did NOT get sick.
star this review starred report as inappropriateI had a lovely time on the cruise. We saw two whales and 8-10 dolphins. The boat ride was beautiful and the captain was incredibly knowledgeable about the animals we saw. The trip is pretty much divided in 3 parts. 2-3 hours to Catalina, 2.5 hours on Catalina, 2-3 hours home. I thought 2.5 hours on Catalina was more than enough time to wander around, grab lunch and get back to the boat. Our trip had 25 people which was very comfortable on the way there as some people were inside and some were out. It got quite cramped on the way back, though, when everyone was inside.
*** You do not return until 6:30pm. This is different than advertised.***
star this review starred report as inappropriateI bought these tickets for my daughter and her family and here are her comments. I would just say everything was good except the guys smoking on the boat, I would have liked one more hr on the island and less time chasing whales.
star this review starred report as inappropriateDespite becoming violently sea sick this was a very nice experience. We saw many dolphins but no whales. Just seeing the dolphins swim along side the boat and jumping out of the water was worth it. If you decide to take this trip be sure to purchase sea sickness medicine and don't risk it. Also be prepared to be around a lot of other ill people vomiting all over the place. No exaggeration.
