Singer-songwriter Lionel Richie got his start in Motown as part of the Commodores, but it's as a solo artist that he really shines. He became one of the most successful male solo artists of the 1980s, earning No. 1 hits starting with his debut in 1982 with "Truly." His other hits include the Caribbean-flavored "All Night Long," "Endless Love" with Diana Ross, "Hello" and "Say You, Say Me," which also won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. Now the five-time Grammy winner is following up a sold-out European run with a North American tour, including a stop at the Honda Center of Anaheim. He'll perform hits from his 30-year discography, beginning with his eponymous 1982 debut and extending through 2012's Tuskegee, a platinum-selling collection that features duets of his hits with a variety of artists. Word on the street is that these concerts tend to become a giant sing-along, so brush up on your lyrics and get ready for some of the greatest ballads the '80s had to offer and much more. Sharing the stage with the five-time Grammy winner will be CeeLo Green. Known for his solo career as well as being a part of the soul duo Gnarls Barkley, Green has recorded numerous hits and is most widely recognized for the chart-topping single "Crazy" and his time as a judge on The Voice. Excellent jazz, nearly continuous through Sunday brunch with just a short break between sets. Mix of older and younger musicians, all dedicated & very proficient, good rapport with the audience. Perfectly nice buffet, not the $75 a head variety at the Ritz, but perfectly adequate -- fruits, pastries, eggs & breakfast meats, cereals, even lox & bagels & bottomless champagne. A steal at Goldstar prices. Great seats too. Disappointed with the number of empty seats, the organizers may have screwed up by not releasing tickets to Goldstar earlier.

ABOUT THE WEEKEND
Thursday’s Grand Opening Night will feature a stunning tribute to Frank Sinatra with the Patrick Williams’ Orchestra conducted by Terry Woodson, in Sinatraland. Said one reviewer of the “10-star tribute to the Chairman” album, “If you like a well-disciplined big band sound, you gotta hear the Sinatraland Orchestra. You’ll love it!” Closing the evening will be a big band tribute to Benny Goodman with clarinet virtuoso Ken Peplowski
Friday evening will kick off with Ken Peplowski, Gilbert Castellanos, Bill Cunliffe, Paul Keller and Lewis Nash in swinging set of the Great American Songbook, followed by the legendary Jimmy & Tootie Heath quartet featuring Cunliffe on piano and Jeff Littleton on bass. Jackie Ryan and the Tamir Hendelman Trio will follow and closing this second great night of straight ahead jazz will be famed drummer Jeff Hamilton and his Trio which features Tamir Hendelman and Christoph Luty.
