The Orange County Women’s Chorus, one of the top amateur musical ensembles in the area, launches its 12th season with The Strangest Moment in History. The chorus will perform an inspiring array of settings of the Magnificat, which is, as one author puts it, “a hymn of praise by a young woman chosen for perhaps the strangest moment in history” – in other words, the moment at which the Virgin Mary, in Christian tradition, discovers she’s to give birth to a savior.
The program includes the works of Ralph Vaughn Williams, Gwyneth Walker, Alan Hovhaness, Paul Chihara, Z. Randall Stroope, and more, plus the world premiere of a new arrangement by Joan Szymko. The performances will feature flute and harp soloists alongside the 35 singers of the OCWC, and a special appearance by renowned mezzo-soprano Deborah Winsor Williams, underwritten by a generous grant from the Robert and Doreen Marshall Fund for Dramatic Arts and Music of the Orange County Community Foundation. The program promises to appeal to all lovers of choral music. A reception will follow each performance.
Founded in 1997, the Orange County Women’s Chorus is in its 12th year together as a performing ensemble. Under the direction of Eliza Rubenstein since 2000, the OCWC has quickly become one of the most respected choruses in southern California. These concerts represent Rubenstein’s first performances with the OCWC since becoming the Director of Choral and Vocal Activities at Orange Coast College, where she continues the choral tradition established by the late Richard Raub. The OCWC is known not only for its high standards of performance and its enterprising programming, but also for its outreach efforts and community partnerships.
The Orange County Women's Chorus
The Orange County Women's Chorus is an ensemble of 35 singing women who believe in raising their voices in song and solidarity. Their repertoire spans many eras and cultures, and ranges from the serious to the silly, but their commitment to performing quality treble music at the highest level never changes. Founded in a living room in 1997 and directed since 2000 by Eliza Rubenstein, the ensemble has quickly become one of the most respected choruses in the area, with performances at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall's REDCAT Theater, and the regional convention of the American Choral Directors' Association, to name a few.
