view more less of this reviewThe cruise itself was GREAT! Saw dozens of dolphins - very playful!! And 2 huge whales!
But... getting there was NOT half the fun!! We were not warned that we'd be in a LONG line to get on the ferry, and the whole "getting there" process was a nightmare! Please warn people to leave an hour earlier than normal!
star this review starred report as inappropriateNo whales or dolphins this time! It was disappointing to only see sea lions and the Newport Harbor. It was a nice boat ride though. Davey's Locker was nice enough to offer a "whale check" to come back anytime for free. All in all it was a nice time out.
star this review starred report as inappropriateBe sure to arrive 30 min before. even if it's a hot day bring a windbreaker or hoodie. especially up front you'll get sprayed by the ocean water. We didn't see any whales but saw lots of dolphins. They were jumping out of the water and racing under and along side of the boat. It was a nice way to spend the day. They have adult beverages as well as coffee, soft drinks and hot chocolate. We had fun.
star this review starred report as inappropriateThe boat ride was delightful. Seagulls entertained us at the foot of the boat as we searched for the vanished whales. I was happy to have picked up a sandwich and water before boarding and used this down time to chat with other guests, finish my lunch, and enjoy the scenery. About an hour into the trip we spotted dolphins (I counted about a dozen but it could have been double that) and apparently there was a whale tucked in amongst them. I couldn't see it. We were told that the dolphins were some rare species. The sound quality of the speakers left a lot to be desired so I'm not exactly sure what was going on hence the four stars instead of five. I will go again. Allow plenty of time for traffic, finding the parking garage (turn south on Adams) and dress in layers.

Description
Newport Landing provides multiple whale watching trips daily departing from Newport Beach. Newport Landing is centrally located in Orange County and minutes from Los Angeles. Newport Landing offers whale watching tours all year.
Year-round cruises view many varieties of whales including the giant blue whale (which attains lengths over 80 feet) during the summer/fall months, the gray whale migration during the traditional winter and spring months, several types of dolphin year-round, seals, and many other types of marine life. Each cruise is a unique experience; you may never know what you might encounter. A recent cruise encountered a huge pod of killer whales numbering over 30 killer whales including adults and young.
The waters surrounding Newport Harbor offer deep, nutrient-rich waters, which attract all types of marine creatures. The Laguna Beach coastline is just south of Newport Harbor and offers some of the most beautiful coastline in Southern California. The gray whales very commonly seen on these cruises seem to enjoy the beauty of the Laguna Beach coastline as well, with many whales spotted just a couple hundred yards off of the beach. Most of Newport Landing's whale watching cruises take in the scenic backdrops of Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and Huntington Beach. Due to the geography of the Orange County coastline and the protection of Catalina Island, the ocean conditions are incredibly calm and comparable to a fresh water lake, allowing whale watchers to fully enjoy the amazing viewing experiences. .
