Known worldwide as one of the most remarkable prodigies of her generation, violinist Sarah Chang has grown from a promising talent into a mature artist of the highest order. Once named Gramophone's Young Artist of the Year, her fresh musical insights, technical virtuosity and intensity of emotion are mesmerizing, especially in a live concert setting. For this performance at Strathmore, she plays Vivaldi's most popular work, his Four Seasons, a set of four short violin concertos that are filled with dazzling effects mimicking natural phenomena such as storms, wind, thunder and rain, as well as bird calls. Chang's 2007 CD of the work attracted international acclaim, with BBC Music Magazine stating, "She has never made a finer recording." She'll also perform Strauss' adagio for strings, Metamorphosen, which he wrote during the closing days of World War II as an elegy for the destruction of Munich, including the historic National Theatre opera house. Interesting assortment of pieces on the program, but we felt that the chorus was often drowned out by the brass volume. In fact we would have preferred the brass alone since the chorus's participation was rather limited in amount of time they performed. Strathmore is a wonderful venue with its clean architectural lines and rather comfortable seating. Loved the placement of musicians in different balconies of the hall.
Thoroughly enjoyed the big band sound of seasonal music!
