"The day on which a High Mass composed by me will be performed during the ceremonies solemnized for Your Imperial Highness will be the most glorious day of my life,” wrote Beethoven to Archduke Rudolf. But Beethoven would not complete the Mass in time for the designated date. As he struggled with the future masterwork, a friend reported: “He looked as if he had been in mortal combat with the whole host of contrapuntists, his everlasting enemies.”
