Having just read the biography of Anais I was interested in seeing how a visual interpretation of her might be conceived. While, physically, the actor and stage set were inline with my expectations the emotional aspect of Anais was particularly missing. You get nothing of the underlying neurosis and self-destruction that was the fuel of her life. The awkwardness of her life does come through slightly but to those who don't know her back story this would seem a weakness of the play rather than what it is...a strength. A too light attempt to capture a figure requiring a much more in depth treatment.

I was pleased to see a play finally about Anais Nin, an icon of the 70's women's movement and a hero of those American women and men who wanted the country to rise above the continuing puratinism in this country that flavors the culture still, into the 21st Century. The play was well written and acted, although the ending needs to be extended and further worked on. Anais Nin would have changed a lot in the last two decades of her life as, living on the west coast, she found herself more and more. So I think her answer to June would have been different. By the way, it did not matter at all that the set was sparse, the Word carried the Visual! Theatre workers in this town struggle mightily to put on good plays with few funds and in this case, the set was irrelevant. It is a bit of a struggle to get to Noho especially if you live on the west side, but well worth it.

A must see. Anais in person or beautiful writing that captures the erotic sensuality of femininity that lies within her and poetically unfolds before our eyes.

Despite the extremely sparse set, was quite impressed by the actress and dialog of the play. Well done...

Description

Written & directed by Michael Phillips
Produced by Larry Minion

Secrets, seduction and betrayal take center stage in the world premiere of Anais: An Erotic Evening with Anais Nin, written and directed by Michael Phillips, produced by Larry Minion, and starring Sonia Maslovskaya.

Anais Nin lived a very public life. But one weekend in the early 1950’s, while Anaïs was living in Los Angeles, she secretly traveled to Arizona. No one, not even her closest of friends, ever knew why she went there.

The play takes place on that missing weekend, at a mental institution, where June Miller (wife of the legendary author, Henry Miller) is a patient after attempting suicide. Anaïs, through conversations with June, a doctor and Henry, the Henry Miller she knew in the early 1930’s, tries to work out why June asked for her and no one else. Anais also questions how she feels about Henry and how she feels about June, and if June is still in love with her. It is an emotional, shattering journey of secrets, seduction and betrayal.
