Based on the true story of legendary country singer Patsy Cline's friendship with her most devoted fan, Louise Seger (played in this production by Sally Struthers of All in the Family fame), Always... Patsy Cline is a heartwarming hit that's been delighting audiences since 1988. Meeting outside of Houston at the Esquire Ballroom, Patsy (played by Carter Calvert) and Louise first became friends over a pot of strong coffee, forming a bond so strong that this unlikely duo remained in touch until Patsy's untimely death in 1963. This musical tribute written by Ted Swindley features a live band and includes 19 of Cline's most unforgettable hits -- such as "Crazy," "Anytime," "She's Got You," "Stupid Cupid" and "Walkin' After Midnight." This gets only two stars because we were not informed that the 9 PM show was preceded by an opening act that was just okay. Nice guys, but not fitting for Saturday night in a theater quality.
Branch didn't go on until well after 10:30 and even then, his band did maybe a 10 minute intro before he came out. Billy is an excellent harp player, but the overall vibe was nearly a memorial for the blues. That stemmed from the announcer noting how few people were in the audience and how back in Chicago in the good old days, it would have been sold out. It really felt that way to me and I'm not only a blues fan, but a musician to boot. Last criticism is that while the theater is really cool, you gots to have liquor with the blues.
