When a woman welcomes an uninvited guest to Thanksgiving dinner, an entire family is challenged and changed in Sovereign Body, an ambitious new drama from playwright Emilie Beck and the Road Theatre Company. Ranging in style from dream play to naturalism, Sovereign Body is a haunting look at a family's struggle to heal in the face of daunting adversity. Scott Alan Smith (That Good Night, Lady) directs this latest work from the celebrated writer of Number of People (which starred Ed Asner in the recent Pasadena Playhouse production) and Habeas Corpus. Nora Dunn does a creditable job as an actress when she presents a number of characters. She is also the author. The major part of her presentation are bits and pieces of recollections from her life, interspersed with some of the characters. When she talks about her past it sounds like she is sharing a diary. She has funny and observant comments. It is billed as a work in progress and indeed that is what it is. I would hope that she could find a more coherent storyline, eliminate the last character, the murdering tourist from Great Britain, who makes no sense whatsoever, and find a better ending. Good luck. G.H.

“A key theme of Dunn’s show is the tension between myth and reality in Hollywood.” —_Chicago Tribune _
