Group Rep at the Lonny Chapman Theatre presents If We Are Women by Joanna McClelland Glass. Author Jessica Cohen has just lost her longtime live-in lover, the one who "gets her" but not the father of her daughter. Her mother and her mother-in-law are visiting to comfort Jessica at her beach home. On the morning that her latest book appears in bookstores and she is packing up her lover's clothes, her daughter has yet to return from the previous night's date. As the three women wait for the teenager to return, they weigh the choices each of them have made in their own lives. Feelings of guilt and regret are punctuated by wry observations on sex, history, ideas and their past relationships. Once the younger woman arrives and disregards the wisdom imparted by her elders, one of her grandmothers remarks, "every time a kid is born we start from zero." Told with humor and great insight, this play explores race, class, nontraditional families and recognizing when we are happy. Sherry Netherland directs. Learn More

SORRY FOLKS!! CONSIDERING THINGS I HAD READ BEFORE HAND, I WAS REALLY, REALLY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS PRODUCTION!! THE LEAD ACTOR HOLDS HIS OWN AND I HIGHLY RESPECT HIS PERFORMANCE. THE WIFE FOR ME WAS NOT BELIEVABLE AND WALKED ( WELL SAT ) THROUGH HER PERFORMANCE. BUT WHAT REALLY TROUBLED ME WAS THE LACK OF ANY CARE AS TO SETTING A MOOD, STAGING, LIGHTING. IT COULD HAVE HAD SUCH AN IMPACT. I REALLY WANTED TO LIKE THIS AS IT WAS SO DIFFERENT FROM ANYTHING I'VE EVER SEEN..... BUT WE WERE LEFT VERY UNSATISFIED!! AND IT COULD HAVE BEEN OTHERWISE HAD SOMEONE CARED TO MAKE SOME EFFORT AS TO THE STAGING/ SOME DRAMATIC LIGHTING...... SOMETHING, ANYTHING. MY COMPANION REALLY DIDN'T CARE FOR IT ( LESS THAN I ) ALTHOUGH RESPECTED THE PERFORMANCE OF THE LEAD ACTOR. DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS.... BUT I REALLY WOULD QUESTION CHARLES A. & ERIC G.'S REVIEWS?? SOMETIMES I'D SWEAR REVIEWS MUST BE WRITTEN BY SOMEONE RELATED IN SOME WAY TO THE PRODUCTION!!Written on May 10 2008

I will acknowledge that this production is not for everyone. The clue of this being for a mature audience will tell you this is not a production to bring the whole family to. I enjoyed it, but I knew if I asked a certain friend to go, she would not have liked it. This one is hard to place as to who the target audience is and how to find the audience to see this production. I'll only say I was surprised at the ending! This is a character study of a conductor who is let's say is very consumed by his art to the point of madness. We hear the thoughts of the characters as they speak out loud what they are thinking. About half way through the production, the conductor starts talking about events that even he isn't sure are real or imagined and you realize this guy is losing it right before your eyes!Written on May 16 2008
All the actors were wonderful and the timing of this piece is very important, therefore kudos goes out to the directors! The conductor not only has most of the lines to speak, but must be constantly conducting an orchestra as well as the concertmaster having to continually saw his bow across his violin as if he were playing in the concert.
This is an edgy piece. I would say that one would not necessarily have to know much about classical music to enjoy this play. People that like psychological thrillers would enjoy this as long as they aren't squeamish. I'll even throw out that Alice Cooper fans that have seen his live concerts and a particular long piece about a character's descent into madness might enjoy this, especially from the front row.

The play is entertaining to those who have read Leonard Bernstein biographies and enjoy Wagner's music but may bewilder those who haven't. As always, McNally's stream-of-consciousness dialogue is both a challenge and a pleasure.Written on May 12 2008

- "Eisenberg, as the breathtakingly egocentric conductor, brilliantly carries the weight of the piece... it's a stunning piece of work, though it may not appeal to every taste." --Backstage West
