The Group Rep at the Lonny Chapman Theatre presents The City. They've updated and resurrected Clyde Fitch's tense political drama, which was a hit 100 years ago but is rarely performed today. It's the story of George Rand, Jr., a small-town politician whose move to the big city is threatened by backroom deals and family scandal.

Good direction by Stan Mazin. Very nice set. Generally good acting, the best though, by Bix Barnaba. A little too many tears from the lead actor.
The plot works well under a very steady hand from director Mazin, though it might have worked a little better if it was kept in the time frame that it was written. Overall, a good prodution well worth seeing.

More Information About The City

Description

The City
by Clyde Fitch
Adapted and Directed by Stan Mazin

The dream... the money... the scandal... George Rand, Jr., a man who is at the top of his game in a small town, wants more -- to play the power game in business and have a prominent career in politics.  And so, he sets out from his small town to conquer the big city. Will the backroom deals and his ambition in the midst of family skeletons, make or break George Rand, Jr.?

The City was written by one of America's most prominent playwrights of the early 20th century.  How could Clyde Fitch know his play would resonate 100 years later?  Amazingly, this American classic does, loud and clear in this updated version of the original drama - - a drama that could have been ripped from today's headlines.
