Once began as a music-fueled indie film that won the nation's heart in 2006, taking home the Best Original Song Oscar for its haunting love ballad "Falling Slowly." Now, Once has taken the Broadway stage by storm, earning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The romantic tale follows a downtrodden Dublin street musician and a delightfully quirky Czech woman who meet in the least likely of places -- a vacuum cleaner repair shop. Their complicated lives make the path to love a rocky one, and they channel their feelings into the music they produce together -- him on guitar, her on piano, two voices harmonizing and setting them free, for a time, from the harsh realities of their lives. We have seen plenty of shows at the Road Theatre and have enjoyed them all. Although, this particular one has to be the worst ever. It had lack of true direction, and a script that had promise, but failed to deliver. Would NOT recommend this...continued
A frantic phone call from Jan forces her brother Andrew to return home to small-town Dixon, Illinois—the boyhood home of Ronald Reagan—to deal with their ailing mother Mae, an irate “temporary” resident of a nursing home. As Jan struggles to leave town and reclaim her life, she and Mae attempt to navigate through their difficult relationship. Meanwhile, Andrew takes his lover on a guided tour through his childhood haunts, reliving the fear and sorrow that has impacted his life. This sometimes-comic “tour” includes a look inside the home of Jan’s soon-to-be-ex-husband, whose best friend has unusual views on life, love, and when to call the vet. Balancing humor and pain, The End of the Tour is a portrait of people attempting to pull themselves up and out of the disappointment in their lives.
