When a woman welcomes an uninvited guest to Thanksgiving dinner, an entire family is challenged and changed in Sovereign Body, an ambitious new drama from playwright Emilie Beck and the Road Theatre Company. Ranging in style from dream play to naturalism, Sovereign Body is a haunting look at a family's struggle to heal in the face of daunting adversity. Scott Alan Smith (That Good Night, Lady) directs this latest work from the celebrated writer of Number of People (which starred Ed Asner in the recent Pasadena Playhouse production) and Habeas Corpus. Saw understudy performances and they were fantastic. All managed to make horrifying material accessible and even humorous. I loved the set and sound effects. The particularly loud buzzes made me jump as well they should. I've seen two shows by this company and have been quite impressed.
Written by Craig Wright, author of the previous Road hit Lady, nominated for a Drama Desk Award 2009 for Outstanding Play. Imprisoned by a totalitarian regime and mercilessly tortured for unknown crimes, Wallace and Valdez live without hope of escape or release. When an enigmatic new prisoner arrives and begins communicating in code, both men develop new relationships to each other, their captors, and themselves. The Unseen is a darkly humorous examination of faith in an uncertain world.
