I've seen many plays in my life. some were good, some great, some even magnificent. I will admit that I've even sat through the bad ones trying to find at least one thing to like. this particular play was so BAD that my husband and I left during intermission. we practically ran back to our car! The Unserious Chekhov was a nightmare. the acting was poor, the setting was awful, there was nothing believable or likable about any of the actors either. there was no humor or satire. actually, the theatre was so hot, small and the 2 plays we managed to sit through made us want to kill ourselves the same way Chekhov's stories were killed. do yourself a favor and run away from this one and don't waste your money.Written on May 02 2010

Description
Farcical, satirical, absurdist, fantastical, silly, romantic…these are words not usually equated with the serious Anton Chekhov. In fact, many of his lesser-known works are quite funny. In The Unserious Chekhov, the cast and crew of a critically panned production of The Cherry Orchard hope to exorcise the all-too serious ghost of Stanislavski from their show. Congregating backstage, the players hold a unique cleansing ritual by performing Chekhov's most wickedly comedic works, including The Bear, Before the Eclipse, Dirty Tragedians and Leprous Playwrights and two world premieres of the translations for On the Main Road and the unfinished The Night Before the Trial. All these wonderful shorts are given a new translation by Chekhov expert George Malko.
George Malko is a published author, playwright and screenwriter whose translation credits include the well-received A Tragic Man Despite Himself: The Complete Short Plays of Anton Chekhov. Fluent in both Russian and Chekhov, Malko will also hold a special Q&A event during the run of the show, providing insight into the complex playwright and his work.
