Overall, this was a wonderful concert. The Szymanowski Overture, although not one of my favorite pieces, was well played. I was truly looking forward to Chopin's 2nd piano concerto, and while Ohlsson's rendition was excellent, the orchestra somewhat failed him, particularly the horns and percussion. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it. Ohlsson's encore, a Chopin waltz, was a treat even though his interpretation was at times surprising and didn't always follow the notes. Dvorak's 7th Symphony was marvelous and justly received a standing ovation. For an encore, the orchestra played the lively Candide Overture with verve and enthusiasm.

This was my first time at the Valley Performing Arts Center and I was very impressed. The Great Hall is lovely and has very good acoustics.

The pieces that the Orchestra played were wonderful. The Pianist Garrick Ohlsson played the piano with amazing sensitivity and interpretation. His skill certainly can not be outdone. I was privileged to have been there. I can't find the words to express my amazement at his expertise and ability to perform.

I didn't like the first piece. It sounded like a noisy mess. Everything else, the Dvorak, Chopin, orchestra, piano soloist, conductor, was wonderful.
