Max Raabe and Palast Orchester: Weimar-Era Music at Paramount Theatre
The Paramount Theatre (Oakland, CA)
Rated 3.7 by 19 members who went.
The San Francisco Jazz Festival presents Max Raabe and Palast Orchester. The German baritone's irresistible, madcap take on the classics of Germany's 1920s and 1930s Weimar era is backed by a big band. They also deliver modern pop tunes in the same style, brilliantly bridging the gap between virtuosity and camp.

Everything was amazing. The theater, the crowd (people were dressed in 20-30th stile), the performance and whole atmosphere.

An incredibly polished performance of 1920s and 1930s dance band music. The performance was pretty much exactly like that given at Carnegie Hall (and recorded) several months ago. Just being music, you'd think that it would sound just as good simply listening to the recording. But the band's choreography added excitement that is missing from the recording. I haven't had so much fun in years!

Tremendously entertaining! I hope they come back to the Bay Area again soon so all the people I told about this concert will have their own chance to see them in person. A friend saw them at Temple Emanuel two years ago & told me how much he enjoyed their show.

The group was first class...the space was monumentally beautiful, but the auditorium was way too large for a concert of this intimacy. I'm guessing the crowd was approx. 1,000 people...and they were really into the moment. I'm pleased to have been there.

I had never heard of this performer/orchestra, but the description (and the bit you could hear on their website) sounded intriguing, especially in the wonderful art deco setting of the Paramount, which makes everything special. The audience was special, too....lots of wonderful hats on both male and female members of the audience and some nice '20s and '30 outfits. And great enthusiasm!

Mr. Raabe is an accomplished singer, a witty MC and members of his orchestra are excellent musicians. It was a rare treat to hear the tuneful songs of a by-gone era, something that is sadly missing from our contemporary musical venues - By all means, go and hear them!

Exceptional show, great musicians, wonderful repertoire, and Max has a classic period crooner voice and shares a dry sense of humor as he introduces each number. Three encores were greatly appreciated.

More Details
Walking a narrow line between sublime musicality and madcap kitsch, German vocalist Max Raabe is a conservatory-trained baritone besotted with the Weimar-era sound. A sight to behold, Raabe and his big band, decked out in tails, deliver impeccable hits from the 1920s and early ’30s—but aren’t above tweaking modern tunes in a retro style. Fresh off a sold-out Carnegie Hall concert, this inimitable band offers a delightful and devilishly catchy night of cabaret.
Personnel: Max Raabe (vocal) Cecilia Crisafulli (violin), Thomas Huder (trumpet, vocals), Michael Enders (trumpet, vocals), Jörn Ranke (trombone, viola, vocals), Bernd Frank (tenor sax, clarinet), Johannes Ernst (alto sax, clarinet), Sven Bährens (alto sax, clarinet), Rainer Fox (baritone sax, bass sax, clarinet, vocals), Vincent Riewe (drums, percussion), Bernd Hugo Dieterich (bass, sousaphone), Ulrich Hoffmeier (guitar, banjo, violin), Ian Wekwerth (piano) Bernd Frank (musical director)
