Excellent. This year's story/celebration of Celtic/medieval yuletide/solstice music and dance is every bit a good as those of years past. Watch for the fool's dance number in the second act -- you've never seen anything like it. Bring your family and add this event to your list of get-into-the-holiday-spirit shows like A Christmas Carol, The Nutcracker, etc. (Now, where can I get some good mead or wassail?)Written on Dec 14 2008

I really enjoyed this event. I did not know what to expect and it was pretty amazing. Very well done and the costumes were incredible. The sing along and crowd participation was fun. It seems like people go to this yearly as some people knew exactly what to do. My favorite part was when the women sang up in the balcony by candle light. I also enjoyed the sword dance. I will go to this again next year. Someone said it was "elaborate" and I agree. I also thought the venue was pretty stunning inside.Written on Dec 15 2008

Great show for Christmas spirit! We've been twice before and love the Medieval theme, costumes, dancing, sets, enthusiasm. Couldn't catch all of the words but the spirit comes through anyway.Written on Dec 15 2008

Description

In 2008, the California Revels will return to the Europe of the so-called “dark ages” with our new interpretation of myth of The King and the Fool. The setting is a medieval castle where a king is entertained by his court, his troubadour, and most significantly, by his court jester. As the Winter Solstice rolls ‘round, the spirit of darkness appears in the guise of the Black Knight whom the King must combat. The action of the show depicts the demise and eventual return of the King who, “Like Winter …must die, Then to life again like Spring!”

The King and the Fool is particularly rich in motifs such as light vs. dark; the turning of the seasons and it echoes such mythology as the Holly King vs. the Ivy King, and even the Arthurian legends. As always, there will be music, ranging from inspiring chorales to hearty sing-alongs, lovely costumes, and courtly dancing. Our wonderful children’s chorus will be a key ingredient this year, along with mumming, the Abbots Bromley dance, and performances by accomplished guest artists.
