North Carolina, expected to be one of the top-ranked teams in the country, plus defending Pac-10 champion Stanford and West Coast Conference rivals Santa Clara and San Francisco, comprise the field for the 2004 Pete Newell Challenge Presented by Allstate.
Two coaches will make their head coaching debuts for new schools in this year’s event: Stanford’s Trent Johnson, taking over for Mike Montgomery, who left after 18 seasons to become head coach of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, and Jessie Evans at USF. Santa Clara will be appearing in the Pete Newell Challenge for the first time ever.
