Sophisticated Ladies explores the legacy of local jazz hero Duke Ellington. The show stars Maurice Hines (Cotton Club, Uptown ... It's Hot!), brother to Gregory Hines and a celebrated Broadway actor himself. This re-creation of the big band sound features some of the most memorable music of Ellington's day, including such classic songs as "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing," "Take the 'A' Train," "Satin Doll" and the haunting "In a Sentimental Mood."
In a fishing lodge in rural Tilghman County, Georgia, two Englishmen arrive as guests, the painfully shy Charlie and the gregarious Froggy. Charlie attempts to avoid social interaction with the colorful locals by passing himself off as a foreigner who doesn’t speak a word of English. Since the town is full of conspiracies and secrets whirling around, he immediately overhears things that make it impossible for him to reveal the truth. Yet he still manages to expose a fraudulent preacher, save a dull-witted boy's inheritance, rescue a widow's home, solve his own personality problems, and even get the girl!
