Fresh from Broadway, Mamet's new comedy November takes a satirical stab at American politics. President Charles Smith, the most corrupt buffoon ever to sit in the Oval Office, is in the final days of his bid for re-election, but the country is a mess and his poll numbers are low. Toss in a lesbian speechwriter longing to marry her sweetheart on TV, Thanksgiving turkeys awaiting pardon, and a ton of shady back-room scheming and you've got Mamet's latest. Learn More

More Details About An Ideal Husband

    More Information

Fresh from his award-winning production of Shaw's Man and Superman, Cal Shakes Artistic Director Jonathan Moscone takes on another great man of words—Oscar Wilde.  A sharply elegant comedy about a Victorian villainess' secret which threatens to destroy a seemingly perfect political marriage, An Ideal Husband is, according to Moscone, “Wilde's most modern play. It’s about what goes on behind closed doors in the grand political arena, where the human meets the iconic, and where the characters—and the audience—confront their desire for the ideals in love and in leadership, in ways that are piercingly funny and amazingly relevant."

Now in his ninth season as Artistic Director of California Shakespeare Theater, Moscone has been highly acclaimed for his productions of Man and Superman, As You Like It, Hamlet: Blood in the Brain, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, The Importance of Being Earnest, Julius Caesar, The Seagull, Twelfth Night, and other works.  His numerous national credits include productions for Berkeley Repertory Theater, Intiman Theatre, San Jose Repertory Theater, Dallas Theatre, Goodspeed, and Portland Stage Company.

Cal Shakes has assembled a cast of familiar faces and Cal Shakes newcomers for this production:  Elijah Alexander, last seen at Cal Shakes in Man and Superman and Restoration Comedy, returns to portray Lord Goring; Associate Artist Julie Eccles (King Lear) plays Gertrude Chiltern; Stacy Ross (Léonide in The Triumph of Love) is the villainess Mrs. Cheveley; Michael Butler, a well known actor, director, and currently the artistic director of Center Rep, makes his Cal Shakes debut as the upstanding politician, Robert Chiltern. Actors returning from the 2007 season also include: Associate Artist Nancy Carlin as Lady Basildon (Man and Superman); Delia MacDougall (King Lear, Man and Superman) as Mrs. Larchmont; Associate Artist Joan Mankin (Nicholas Nickleby) as Lady Markby; Sarah Nealis (King Lear) as Mabel.

Joining Moscone’s creative team are Annie Smart (Set Designer); Meg Neville (Costume Designer); Scott Zielinski (Lighting Designer); and Jeff Mockus (Sound Designer).
