California Shakespeare Theatre commissioned this new play from celebrated Bay Area playwright Octavio Solis. Based on John Steinbeck's 1932 novel, John Steinbeck's The Pastures of Heaven depicts both the humor and the heartbreak of hardscrabble characters in search of happiness in the seemingly idyllic landscape of the Salinas Valley where Steinbeck himself grew up.

Great set great acting (was really impressed with Toby Windham who just reently graduated from ACT). The whole thing could have been pared down a bit but I'm so glad I stuck it out in the cold (I dressed for the mountains) because the ending was fantastic!

We thoroughly enjoyed the play, with main characters and families involved in several of the stories. Plenty of humor, wit, major life/death issues, interesting plot lines, excellent acting with the ensemble members playing numerous characters well. The Lopez sisters sang their story in a particularly clever way. Complicated, multi-level set worked well for the various story settings. Central Salinas Valley farm scenes and love of the land come through clearly, with people's various complicated relationships to the houses and land. We'd recommend it highly. New renovations of bathrooms, terrace and snack bar are well done.

This was very loooong. It was a bunch of mini-plays all wrapped into one. Some of the sections were really good and well acted. I really liked the actress that played the school teacher and the scenario with the mother and mentally unstable daughter. The cast played many different roles very well. They should have had intermission right after the singing Latina sister. It would have been a better "fit". This duo could have been more campy, fun, and over the top. Perhaps they will with more performances. The set was amazing and the view is spectacular.

I just love this venue and I can't wait to go back. Bring plenty of warm clothes. I still froze with 2 jackets. You can rent blankets though. Wish they had heating lamps. Very well done cafe and seating areas with tables.

Too fragmented to have much of a dramatic impact. Amazing acting exercise and well directed but the parts were more satisfying than the whole.
