The Bruns amphitheatre is such a spectacular setting, nestled among the hills of Orinda. Even the concession stand staff is really fun and friendly here. The cast were real pros and very engaging. They were able to convey the excitement and drama that Shakespeare intended. The lead actor playing King Richard III, Reg Rogers, was truly remarkable in creating a memorable character who was intense and powerful. He brought a very challenging role (both physically and intellectually) to life. I loved his performance! One more thing, if this is your first time at Cal Shakes, be sure to dress warmly!Written on Jun 09 2007

More Information About Richard III
Description
Nationally acclaimed director Mark Rucker will present a new production of Richard III. Rucker, who last directed at California Shakespeare Theater in 2001, with Romeo and Juliet, has staged over 50 productions nationwide in the past decade. His credits include work with Arena Stage, La Jolla Playhouse, South Coast Repertory Theater, Seattle’s Intiman, Berkeley Repertory Theater, A.C.T., and the leading Shakespeare festivals across the country.
Reg Rogers will make his auspicious California Shakespeare Theater debut in the title role of Richard III. His award-winning career, which includes a Best Actor Tony Award nomination for Holiday, spans stage productions in New York and regional theater companies, in addition to numerous television and film roles. Bay Area audiences are familiar with Rogers, who was in the 2004 A.C.T. production of A Mother.
“Reg has always wanted to play the role and he feels that he’s at a point in his life where he’s ready to do it,” commented the company's artistic director, Jonathan Moscone. “When Mark and I were talking about doing the play he said, ‘I’ll do it if I can get Reg Rogers to do it.’ And sometimes all you need is a key – someone you feel you can work with that’s going to unlock your capacity to investigate the play.”
Appearing with Rogers in the cast of Richard III will be four Associate Artists of the company: James Carpenter (King Edward IV), who last appeared in As You Like It; Catherine Castellanos (Queen Margaret), who portrayed Mistress Page in The Merry Wives of Windsor; Dan Hiatt (Duke of Buckingham), who played Touchstone in As You Like It; and Susannah Livingston (Lady Anne), who essayed Rosalind in As You Like It.
The cast also features veteran company actors Blake Ellis (Henry, Earl of Richmond), Lorri Holt (Queen Elizabeth), Andrew Hurteau (Lord Stanley), Sharon Lockwood (Duchess of York), Max Gordon Moore (George, Duke of Clarence), Brad Myers (Earl Rivers), Liam Vincent (Sir William Catesby), and T. Edward Webster (Lord Hastings). Kevin Dedes (Prince Edward, Dorset), will make his company debut. Thomas Azar and Raife Baker are in the ensemble.
Joining Rucker’s creative team for Richard III will be Erik Flatmo (Set Design), Katherine Roth (Costume Designer), Robert Wierzel (Lighting Designer), Ted Crimy (Sound Designer), and Dave Maier (Fight Director).
