It was their first preview and I thought they were very well prepared. A couple of costume adjustments needed:) It took me a bit to get into the characters but I was sobbing buckets by the end! They were all able to show a wide range of emotion. Iago was just plain scary crazy in Act II and Othello was amazing. I was very touched with Emilia's character especially in the final scene. I highly reccommend it.Written on Jun 02 2005

More Information About Shakespeare's Othello
Description
California Shakespeare Theater begins its 2005 season with William Shakespeare's explosive masterpiece, OTHELLO. Billy Eugene Jones and Sarah Grace Wilson make their Cal Shakes debuts as Othello and Desdemona; Bay Area favorite Bruce McKenzie returns as Iago.
Cal Shakes Associate Artistic Director Sean Daniels, director of last season's inventive production of THE COMEDY OF ERRORS, helms the season opener. Billy Eugene Jones, most recently seen on Broadway in August Wilson's GEM OF THE OCEAN and the Tony Award-winning revival of A RAISIN IN THE SUN, makes his Cal Shakes debut in the title role; Bruce McKenzie, who last appeared at Cal Shakes in 2003's critically acclaimed production of MEASURE FOR MEASURE, appears as Iago; and Sarah Grace Wilson, most recently seen in the Public Theatre and Long Wharf Theatre's productions of THE STORY, makes her Cal Shakes debut as Desdemona. Others in the cast include Chris Ayles, Hector Correa, Catherine Castellanos, Lisa Anne Morrison, Nicholas Pelczar, and T. Edward Webster.
''OTHELLO is one of the greatest political thrillers ever written, and its themes and ideas remain astonishingly relevant today," commented director Sean Daniels. "The issues in the play - everyone wanting that which they can't have; soldiers going off to fight wars only to watch quickly constructed governments crumble; actions being driven by power, sex, fear, and race; and people making incredibly rash decisions in their lust for control and influence - these are the very same topics that we find ourselves facing each time we turn on the TV or open a newspaper."
Cal Shakes has several Audience Enrichment events scheduled during the run of OTHELLO: the Grove Talks (offered nightly, 45 minutes before each performance) provide valuable insight into the work as members of the artistic staff discuss the relationship between the play and the production; Inside Scoop (May 16, 7pm, Orinda Library), sponsored by Friends of the Orinda Library, allows audience members to meet directors, actors, and designers during the rehearsal process to learn about directorial and actor points of view and design ideas; Insight Matinee (June 12, following the performance) explores the world of the play through an informal dialogue with the production's dramaturg; and Meet the Artists Matinees (June 5 and 19, following the performance), offers a post-show discussion series with production cast members.
California Shakespeare Theater's Bruns Amphitheater is located in the East Bay Hills between Berkeley and Orinda on a protected watershed. The grounds open two hours before curtain for picnicking in the eucalyptus and oak groves; on-site gourmet catering, beer and wine service are available, or patrons may bring their own. The Theater offers free shuttle service from the Orinda BART station, beginning ninety minutes before the performance, and special services for the visually and hearing impaired.
OTHELLO is sponsored in part by East Bay Leadership Foundation, with support from lead corporate sponsors Aidells Sausage Company, Bison Brewing Company, Bell-Carter Foods, Delta Air Lines, Hayward Digital Print Center, Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa, Peet's Coffee & Tea, Shapell Homes, and Swinerton Management & Consulting.
