California Shakespeare Theater continues its 2012 season with the dynamic Obie-winning musical, Spunk. Live music performed by Anthony Michael Peterson a.k.a. Tru frames the stories of Harlem Renaissance writer Zora Neale Hurston as adapted for the stage by George C. Wolfe (Jelly's Last Jam). The lives of early 20th-century African-Americans are brought back to brilliant life on stage in a trio of Hurston's tales. Sweat is the satisfying tale of a long-suffering washerwoman who finally gives her husband his just desserts. The Gilded Six Bits follows the process of a tender young husband as he learns to forgive the wife who betrayed him. Finally, there is Story in Harlem Slang, "a jamboree of 1940's uptown slang," according to Frank Rich of the New York Times. The production draws on a range of influences from African-American culture from art to modern Harlem architecture as well as the vibrant choreography of Harlem-based Paloma McGregor.

this was our first time at this beautiful site. we took a picnic and sat at a nice table surrounded by eucalyptus trees. we listened to a description of the play that we were going to see. every seat has a great view. the backdrop of the mountains and oak trees add to the ambiance.
we will definitely go again.

Description

The Cal Shakes 2012 season continues with a wild, bluesy wail—three stories by the great Harlem Renaissance writer Zora Neale Hurston, adapted into a staggeringly theatrical play by George C. Wolfe, who won an Obie for its 1989 off-Broadway premiere production. A trio of vignettes of African-American life in the first half of the 20th century, Spunk is a raucous, charming, blues-infused look at love, revenge, jealousy, and the fine art of the hustle.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: Spunk contains mature subject matter and is best enjoyed by ages 13+. See the "Age Recomendation" information for more details.

Running time: 90 minutes, no intermission
