This one was a little different for me. I always enjoy Cal Shakes even if the play is not "up my alley".Written on Aug 10 2006

Description
California Shakespeare Theater continues its 2006 season with The Merchant of Venice, directed by nationally acclaimed director Daniel Fish, whose production of Measure for Measure for Cal Shakes in 2003 was hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “wonderfully immediate, restlessly provocative and unusually touching and funny.” Fish brings his unique vision to The Merchant of Venice, creating a theatrically daring, emotionally complex, and altogether captivating production. The Merchant of Venice, starring Jenny Bacon, David Chandler, Delia MacDougall, Max Moore, Andy Murray, Danny Scheie, Andrew Weems, T. Edward Webster, Nick Westrate, and Elvy Yost, plays August 9 through September 3 at the Bruns Amphitheater in Orinda.
The Merchant of Venice has been staged on Broadway in more than 45 incarnations dating back to 1768-- the most recent revival starring Dustin Hoffman as Shylock in 1989. The play has also been produced in scores of retellings in film, including star turns by Laurence Olivier and Orson Wells, both playing Shylock in separate television projects. A 2004 film version of The Merchant of Venice, featuring Al Pacino as Shylock, played to critical acclaim in a limited theatrical release.
