My husband and I laughed out loud all through the first act. Although the plot is high silliness, it is exquisitely executed. The first act fairly sings along. The second act felt slightly leaden and repetitive.Written on Aug 16 2007

More Information About The Triumph of Love
Description

Cal Shakes presents the world premiere adaptation of The Triumph of Love written and directed by Lillian Groag, in a co-production with San Jose Repertory. Groag, a veteran of several Cal Shakes productions (The Tempest, Arms and the Man, Taming of the Shrew, and Moliere’s Scapin, the Cheat), returns following her recent work directing Orfée et Eurydice at Glimmerglass Opera. This acclaimed actress, writer and director, is an Associate Artist at the Old Globe Theatre. She has appeared on stage on Broadway, off-Broadway, and at the Mark Taper Forum. Her directing credits include the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, The Old Globe Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville, New York City Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, A.C.T., and the repertory theater companies of Berkeley, Seattle, and San Jose, among others.

The Triumph of Love cast will feature four Cal Shakes Associate Artists of the company: Ron Campbell (Dimas); Catherine Castellanos (Corine, in disguise as Hermidas); Dan Hiatt (Hermocrates); and Domenique Lozano (Leontine). Three other actors long familiar to Cal Shakes audiences complete the cast: Stacy Ross (Léonide, in disguise as Phocion); Danny Scheie (Arlecchino); and Jud Williford (Agis).

The creative team includes Frederick Kluck, who worked with Groag on the translation; Kate Edmunds (Set Designer); Raquel Barreto (Costume Designer); Russell Champa (Lighting Designer); and Jeff Mokus (Sound Designer).

Marivaux was born in Paris in 1688. His rich body of work encompasses some 35 plays, mostly comedies, and mostly about the state of amour and awakening emotions. His distinctive style of prose banter was dubbed marivaudage by the press of the day. His writings reflect the great changes in the French Court, that of King Louis XIV to the more hedonistic period of King Louis XV. Marivaux’s most famous play is Jeu de l’amour et du hasard, of 1730, and his Le Triomphe de l’Amour dates to 1732. Next to Molière, Marivaux is the second-most-performed comic author at the fabled Comédie Française.
