Palo Alto Players present Aftermath, a documentary play by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen. In 2008, the two writers traveled to Jordan to interview Iraqi civilians and hear their stories of how the American occupation of Iraq beginning in 2003 had affected their lives. They interviewed 35 people and got a cross-section of the many different lives affected by the chaos and violence that came in the wake of these events. When the two playwrights returned to America, they created Aftermath, an unforgettable and moving new play based on real conversations with real Iraqis.

West Bay Opera presents Giuseppe Verdi's Aida. Composed at the request of the King of Egypt for the opening of the Suez Canal in 1871, the opera tells the tragically romantic story of an enslaved Ethiopian princess' doomed love for the military leader Radames, who has been chosen to marry the Pharaoh's daughter. Presented in collaboration with Kunst-Stoff Ballet Company, Aida is among the most frequently performed operas and was turned into a hit Broadway musical by Elton John and Tim Rice. Yefim Maizel directs the performance, which is sung in Italian with English titles. Learn More

I really liked the opening. The idea was a good one, and thought-provoking. I was in Row M and had a difficult time hearing some of the dialog. One of the narratives in the middle seemed too long, and once or twice I had the idea that the author wanted to be sure to throw everything in. My overall reaction was mixed.

Acting was excellent. It was very educational and insightful. More negative than I expected and felt anger directed at me. Overall, very glad that I attended.

The topic was quite relevant and thought provoking. It was difficult to follow the dialogue for a few reasons, First, there was a need for microphones or the actors needed to project their voices more effectively. Secondly, because some of the dialogue was in another language and accents were used, it was hard to follow given the poor projection. It is a play with promise if the technical difficulties are addressed.
