Bizet's Carmen from West Bay Opera at Lucie Stern Theatre
Lucie Stern Theatre (Palo Alto, CA)
Rated 3.5 by 27 members who went.
Never having set foot in Spain, in 1875 the 36-year-old Bizet composed a thoroughly French opera on Spanish themes. It tells the story of Carmen, a sensuous gypsy in 1870s Seville who lives in the moment, and her zest for life makes men flock to her. This is an original West Bay Opera staging of this popular opera.

I love this so much that I Googled the lead, and send her a personal email telling her how much I appreciated her performance as Carmen. The musicians were fabulous. Set designs awesome. A small intimate theater where we sat in the almost-last row and had a great view and good acoustics. A very wonderful pit orchestra rounded out the performance. It's nice to have such good opera so close to home. Great flute work! Thanks for a wonderful experience

The venue ; Lucie Stern Center in Palo Alto - every seat in the house is a good one because it is such a small venue. Great acoustics and lighting etc. Delicious intermission treats as well.

The performance was excellent! The singers and orchestra were amazing. The location (Lucie Stern Theatre) was also great because it was a much smaller opera house - therefore every seat was a great seat!

This is a great theater as it is relatively small so all the seats are pretty good. This is the second production I have seen at West Bay opera - both thru goldstar - and the quality is great as well as the goldstart price!

Well performed but no UMPH...Also, casting should be more considerate.
P C aside - We wish Don José would better fit the image of a desirable lover.

If you love opera, and especially Carmen, go see this performance! The singers, orchestra and production were all excellent. The ticket price is a bargain compared to other productions of this quality.

I like this venue. They just had the AC turned up a bit high but the sound was decent and the set and performances were good.

Carmen was a strong, determined woman who did not have good taste in men but that's what makes it a great opera.

I would not again buy tickets without knowing where my seats will be. We were seated at the wall which was far enough to the side that we could not see part of the side of the stage.

for a local production it was well done....however, the theater was freezing cold and many people left early because there was reportedly no way to turn down the AC or shut off the fan!!!!!

More Details
Carmen, a sensuous gypsy in 1870s Seville, lives in the moment, and her zest for life makes men flock to her. Don José, a soldier, is no exception. Falling madly in love with Carmen, he abandons his first love, neglects his mother, becomes a deserter and joins Carmen and the gypsy smugglers. But Carmen soon loses interest in him, and rejects him in favor of Escamillo, the bullfighter. Desperately jealous, Don José kills her.
Sung in French with English supertitles.
Music by George Bizet
Libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy
After the novella by Prosper Mérimée
