One of the all-time great movie comedians and a silent-film innovator, Buster Keaton comes to life in STONEFACE: The Rise and Fall and Rise of Buster Keaton, starring 3rd Rock from the Sun's French Stewart. With his iconic deadpan expression and pork pie hat, Keaton helped define the cinematic art form -- in between taking some landmark pratfalls -- with classic films like The General and Our Hospitality. But after his meteoric rise, Keaton fell on hard times fueled by his alcoholism. Winner of five L.A. Weekly Theater Awards, including Production of the Year, STONEFACE tells Keaton's inspiring story of redemption through the lens of his films, recreating some of his most memorable gags live on stage. This play packs a lot into a fairly short time. The story tracks fairly closely the Duke Lacrosse case, with a focus on a young, ambitious reporter who gets swept up in her own initial success. It shows pretty clearly the pressures and temptations faced by journalists in their quest to gain and maintain notoriety. The acting is convincing all around and the play gives a good feel for the hydraulic pressure created on everyone connect to a big news story.

This is one of the best plays the Pasadena Playhouse has presented in years. The audience is made to care about the characters. The story is multi layered and involving. Great acting and modern, projected scenery help to bring the story to life.
