Other reviews have criticized the plot; this is unfair, since there IS no plot. This is not traditional storytelling, but is rather a collection of memories and experiences from a wide variety of people, relating to hats and black culture. It's kind of like The Vagina Monologues with singing, except without an agenda, and without the shock value.

This is a story of relationships, life in black-America, and women in hats. Every artist seems to be in to their character and the music is absolutely touching. It will make you laugh and cry and leave feeling good! The artists are fine actors and brilliant singers.

The venue, Pasadena Playhouse, is also ideal for a charming story like this one and you will leave happy, touched, and wanting to buy a hat for yourself and work on your hat-attitude (you've got to see the play to know what that means).

I have made it a personal mission to tell everyone I know about it to support the artists and their commitment. An absolutely, "don't miss" event.

I thoroughly enjoyed this play. I could relate to the story line, and I thought the singing was great. I think Yolanda (the girl from Brooklyn) had a beautiful voice and should be allowed to sing more. My seven year old granddaughter also enjoyed it.

We were 4 generations attending (87, 65, 44 and 13 years old) and we all really enjoyed the play. The music was wonderful and each of the characters had something very special to offer .. and the hats! wonderful hats! We also enjoyed the art and hat exhibit ... really tempting! Highly recommended for all ages.

Quotes & Highlights

  • Crowns is a co-production with Los Angeles' Ebony Repertory Theatre, whose recent staging of the show won Goldstar's Roar of the Crowd award.

Description

By Regina Taylor
Directed by Israel Hicks
Adapted from the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry
A co-production with Ebony Repertory Theatre in Association with Regina Taylor.

Winner of four Washington D.C. Helen Hayes awards including Best Regional Musical, Crowns explores the lives of the "hat queens," six women in the South whose stories of love, loss, identity and sisterhood are woven into the hats that crown their heads and the songs that speak their truth. Based on the acclaimed coffee table book, Crowns captures the thrill of self expression with a series of intimate musical portraits.

A special note about this landmark co-production for Pasadena Playhouse Artistic Director Sheldon Epps:

"I am pleased and honored to enter into what I hope will be the beginning of a long and rewarding collaboration with Ebony Repertory Theatre. It is a great joy to be a participant in the Los Angeles premiere of Regina Taylor's joyous paean to African-American women, which fits so well into the Playhouse season celebrating women onstage."
