This was quite a deal -- 3 shows, usually $85-90 each, for $120 ... and this was for the Saturday night series! RAY CHARLES LIVE was like seeing the man himself in concert. The story may not go smoothly from A to B, but neither did JERSEY BOYS. Looking forward to ORSON'S SHADOW and MASK, too!Written on Nov 26 2007

Ray Charles Live! A New Musical
Book by Suzan-Lori Parks
Directed by Sheldon Epps
Ray Charles touched perhaps more bases than any other performer in American musical history, mastering everything from rhythm and blues to gospel, jazz, country and pop--delivering them all with equal expertise. Ray Charles Live! A New Musical will bring to the stage this incredible variety of musical styles, capturing the energy, the hard-driving musicality and electricity of Charles live onstage. Beyond that, it will examine the emotional forces that shaped the man who made the music, and depicts his struggles and challenges, the fascinating people in his life, as well as his incredible triumphs and his joy. As he forces himself to dig deeper and deeper over the course of this momentous recording session, the show reveals not just his story, but the true soul of the man whose life and music actually helped to define soul. Featuring many of Charles’s hits including “Georgia on My Mind,” “What’d I Say,” “Mess Around,” “Hit the Road, Jack,” “Unchain My Heart,” “I Got a Woman” and “Hallelujah, I Love Her So.”
Orson's Shadow
By Austin Pendleton
Orson's Shadow is an ingenious tale of two Hollywood giants: Orson Welles and Laurence Olivier. The time is 1960; the place is a West End theatre. Legendary critic Kenneth Tynan has made a startling proposal: Welles should direct Olivier and the young Joan Plowright in Rhinoceros, Ionesco’s absurdist masterpiece. But it is the rehearsal process that brims with absurdity as titanic personalities, including Vivien Leigh, wrestle the muse. Based on an actual event, Orson’s Shadow is a witty and incisive depiction of the drama of theatre.
Mask, A World Premiere Musical
Book by Anna Hamilton Phelan
Music and lyrics by Barry Mann
Lyrics by Cynthia Weil
One of the most successful songwriting teams in history, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil ("You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling" and "On Broadway") join playwright and screenwriter Anna Hamilton Phelan (the Oscar-winning film "Mask" and "Gorillas in the Mist") to bring audiences a deeply touching story of a mother’s love for her child. This new musical is based on a true story.
