Even with a few minor problems*, this was an amazing show. I learned quite a bit of interesting things about many aspects of Lincoln's life and his times. I also cried. My husband also loved it. Minor issues: couldn't always hear actor's voice above live orchestra; is a live orchestra necessary? (We bought the CD, but found that it didn't do the show justice at all - not recommended if you haven't seen show.)

Hershey is amazing in his talent. This show was not as good as the previous one I was lucky to get the tix for. The subject about Lincoln's last hours was not very dear to me... I will always recommend going to any of Hershey's performances.

Hershey Felder was again, outstanding, playing, not Lincoln, but Dr. Leale the young doctor who was at the scene of Lincoln's assassination. It was a vary emotional performance and the orchestra was on stage which enhanced the story with a patriotic theme. We've sceen all the performances of Hershey Felder at the Playhouse this season and will continue to follow him. He is an unbelievable performer, composer, singer and pianist beyond compare!

This play is awesome! Hershey Felder has written this piece about Lincoln's final hours from the point of view of the attending physician. His original music is performed onstage by an excellent orchestra, which accompanies his narration and original songs. This is an amazing piece of work. The audience rose as one at its conclusion.

Hershey Felder is wonderful, as always, in this new, innovative production. He is a great talent-- actor, musician, composer and playwrite. This portrayal of the doctor attending Lincoln was poignant and added a new light on the life and death of Lincoln. Great work! Thank you!! Oh- and Pasadena Playhouse was a lovely venue.

Hershey Felder's show was a poignant & touching play about the young doctor who was at Lincoln's side during his final hours after being shot at Ford's Theatre. Goldstar's assignment of seats however was terrible (last row of the theatre in back even though I'd purchased them in advance & there were seats in the front row at that time).

I just completed reading the book "Killing Lincoln" by Bill O'Reily. Mr Hershey's depiction of the events of that fatal night which changed the course of history was like being present at the Ford Theater. I have enjoyed the three (3) bodies of work in this collection as well as his previous presentation of George Gershwin. I hope Mr Hershey will return to The Pasadena Playhouse soon.

I like this production. This is the 2nd Hershey Felder production I've seen. He is such a hard worker and lovely singer. I took my 14 year old niece who had just been studying some aspects of Lincoln in school; we both walked away a little more knowledgeable.
However, the real winner was the seats we had. We both were elated...1st row balcony...dead center!! Perfect. Thank you Goldstar! I love you guys!

It was so dramatic that we couldn't talk afterwards. Even my husband had tears in his eyes. Felder was so fabulous that if he performed it at the real Ford's theater in Washington, DC, we might consider flying there to see it. Don't miss this wonderful performance!

I have seen all of Hershey Felder's shows and loved them. Lincoln, however, fell a bit flat. The story was interesting but there wasn't enough meat for a stand-alone play. I expected to see more about Lincoln. Instead, it was the reminiscences of a Union Army surgeon who tended to Lincoln after he was shot; the story was just too thin. Hershey did a superb acting and singing job but he was often drowned out by the orchestra and we coudn't hear what he was saying/singing. The venue is very nice.

The venue is wonderful, we had good seats and the orchestra was great. The play itself was gripping and memorable and the performance excellent. It went very close to 'over the top' a few times but because the material is part of our nearly-sacred national history, it was still palatable. I had been hesitant to attend but am very glad I did. Kudos for bringing this story to more people.

Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan and have seen all of Mr. Felder's shows. I can appreciate an artist branching out with new material, but this? Why Abraham Lincoln? I couldn't wait for intermission so I could leave. By the way, there is no intermission. Just an hour and a half of slow, repetitive story telling about the doctor who tried to save Abraham Lincoln the night he was assassinated. Yes there is new music sung by Mr. Felder with an orchestra on stage to accompany him but even the music is boring. And at the end, the audience is encouraged to stand up and sing along! Yuck! Please Mr. Felder, stick to the music written by the masters and continue to tell their story.

Having seen Hershey Felder as Gershwin in San Diego we were looking forward to Lincoln with great anticipation.

The story of Dr. Leale is fascinating, but there isn't enough to it. Leale is only a footnote to an incredible story. Thus, as interesting as Leale's part is, there simply isn't enough material to do a play about Leale and this is where it breaks down. Too much, including "The Gettysburg Address" is thrown in to fill the 75 minute running time. The music performed by a live orchestra, original and well written, is the star of the show. This play is for those interested in learning something about history or die-hard fans of the Lincoln assassination story. Those who are familiar with the Leale part in the story or those looking for entertainment will be disappointed.

ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!!! We have seen all of the other productions done by Hershey Felder, i.e., Chopin, Leonard Bernstein, Gershwin, etc.

In those shows, Hershey Felder WAS the individual protrayed. In Abe Lincoln, it was an absolute disappointing farce. Everyone went, thinking that we would learn something about Lincoln!

There is no way that I could put a more negative comment on this production.

Another tour-de-force by Hershey Felder. The man is amazing-- he can act, he can sing, he can play the piano, and he can compose -- all first rate. You will not only learn or refresh your knowledge of the Lincoln assassination but you'll be totally caught up in the emotions of the event. The ending will have you choked up with pride for what Lincoln and the USA stand for. My only wish was that the show were a little longer --- it is just an hour. Our suggestion to Mr. Felder: compose a companion piece related to the assassination of John F Kennedy and perform them as a two-act play.

An excellent performance, but be aware that in this one man operatic play (accompanied by a full orchestra) Mr Felder portrays Charles Leale M.D., the young army surgeon who attended Lincoln as he was dying after the assassination. It was an interesting and somber production.

I attended the Lincoln performance with a friend who has seen 3 other performances of Mr. Felder's and just raved about him. She hated last night's performance and indicated that it was nothing like the other performances. I believe that is important to know. His voice and acting ability are superb in my estimation but the subject matter (Lincoln's death)was anything but thrilling.

I have seen all of Mr. Felder's performances - Gershwin, Beethoven, Bernstein, Chopin. This was, by far, the most inferior of his performances. Although the subject matter is interesting, the performance, advertised as 90 minutes ended after little more than 1 hour and the orchestra was MUCH too loud, sometimes drowning out Mr. Felder's voice although he was well miked. Last comment: the venue, which I have been attending since I was a teenager, was extremely uncomfortable. My seat had a spring coming through the upholstery making it one of the least comfortable seats EVER! Overall, if you do want to see the performance, go to a different venue and don't expect it to live up to Mr. Felder's previous presentations.

I did not enjoy this nearly as much as the other Hershey Felder shows I've seen. For purposes of full disclosure, I should add that my boyfriend loved it and the audience was enthusiastic. I just thought the story was a bit thin, and he had to stretch to make it 65 minutes long. Plus I didn't find him as credible as a purely historical figure rather than a musical one.

Hershey Felder again does an excellent portrayal. This was not up to the quality of his previous shows, but certainly worthwhile seeing. This time he had a full orchestra accompany him, but at times the music overwhelmed him, the speaker. The music was okay, but not particularly memorable.

I will go to this one every time. I went last year and loved it and then again this year. Hershey's spontaneous personality comes through as he conducts the audience - even though both events were similar in conducting and choices of music. I saw Gershwin last year - enjoyed that more. This was not because of the performance, but rather the fact that Bernstein did not contribute as much as a composer, but rather more as a conductor. Variety of music was limited, Bernstein was not a sympathetic character as played.

Hershey Felder is warm, welcoming, encouraging and funny. His sing-a-longs are great and we need many more of them!

Interesting discussion about the various songwriters. Lots of stories about Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hammerstein and others. Would have like a lyric sheet as it was hard to follow when he called out the lyrics really fast if you didn't know a particular song. It was a lot of fun.

I've seen this twice and enjoyed it both times. Lots of background information on Bernstein's life and, especially, his formative years.

I loved the singalong but, having seen it twice before, I am realizing that the same songs and the same autobiographical details will always be featured.
Much as I adore the atmosphere of the event, I don't think I will attend again unless I know the program will be different.

Hershey Felder is a multi-talented musician. He loves to act and tell stories and he is an accomplished pianist and singer/performer. He entertained us with the history of the music from the sing-along beginning with Irving Berlin and continuing through Rogers and Hammerstein. He played the piano, gave us the words, conducted our singing, and critiqued our singing. Overall the evening was great fun. Especially for those of us who already new all of the music, I'd say about 98% of the attendees. The whole show is 90 minutes with no intermission. The show was a sell-out.

Such a happy accident! I had previously enjoyed Mr. Felder's pieces on Bernstein and Chopin, so I thought I would attend the Lincoln, expecting excellence at anything he does and curious about what Lincoln had to do with music. But I had actually bought a ticket to the sing-along! So happy I did, as at times I was laughing so hard I could hardly breathe, always enjoy singing (I sing in two choirs.)and loved the trip through theatre history and its sentiments. What a presence! I will attend absolutely everything I hear of him doing in the future!

Fabulous show by an outstanding performer. Enjoyable from start to finish. What a great flair for storytelling through music. Singing along made us part of the performance. Laughed and cried.

Mr. Felder is a talented and energetic performer whose acting invites the viewer vicariously into the life of Mr. Bernstein through song, piano, narrative, and video. He is a skillful and expressive pianist. The production runs the gamut of emotions -- there are moments of beauty, of shock, of recognition, of pathos . . . hugely creative, it was a stimulating and thoroughly enjoyable experience!

An "intimate" look at Berstein as only Felder does it. He inhabits his subjects in a way that makes you feel like you actually are listening to Berstein speak. We have seen Felder before and will see him again and again.

Description

Lincoln - An American Story

Lincoln - An American Story is Felder’s newest work for actor and symphony orchestra. Lincoln is a true tale based on the words of Dr. Charles Augustus Leale – who in April of 1865 as a twenty-three year old medical student attended the April 14th performance of Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. with President Lincoln in attendance. When the actor, John Wilkes Booth made his way into President Lincoln’s box to assassinate him, a surgeon was called for, and Charles Leale, just a young American army surgeon found himself at the center of history that would change the world. Charles Leale only told the story of what he witnessed and was a part of that evening only  once in his life as a sixty-three year old man – at a gathering of army friends at Delmonico’s restaurant in New York City on the occasion of Lincoln’s hundredth birthday in 1909. It is this story, the document of which resides at the Library of Congress, upon which this new musical/theatrical work is based.

Monsieur Chopin

Monsieur Chopin
is a celebrated work about the life and music of legendary composer, Frédéric Chopin. Audiences are invited to a private piano lesson that actually took place on March 4, 1848 in the opulent Parisian salon of the Polish maestro. As the lesson unfolds, Chopin reveals secrets about the art of the piano and composition, as well as secrets about himself in this intimate musical biography featuring Chopin’s greatest works, including the Prelude in C Minor, Mazurka in A Flat Major, Polonaise in A Major, and his elegant Nocturnes. The Pasadena Playhouse’s presentation of Monsieur Chopin will also include a newly-discovered cadenza in Chopin’s own handwriting for his Nocturne in Eb, opus 9/2. The cadenza was uncovered in the collection of one of his student's families, written in pencil on a first edition print of the Nocturne from 1834, when Chopin first started teaching in Paris.

Maestro: Leonard Bernstein

Maestro: Leonard Bernstein is Felder’s latest composer creation, and has played to critical and popular acclaim at theatres throughout the country. With a story spanning the entire 20th century, Leonard Bernstein broke through every artistic ceiling possible to become the world's musical ambassador. Conductor, composer, pianist, author, teacher, librettist, television star ... for Leonard Bernstein, boundaries simply did not exist.
