Pasadena Playhouse presents Vanities. Chronicling the comic journey of three vivacious Texas teens from cheerleaders to sorority sisters to housewives, liberated women and beyond, this musical evokes the turbulent, exciting era of the 1960s and '70s. David Kirshenbaum's tuneful score complements Jack Heifner's hilarious adaptation of his long-running off-Broadway smash.

If this is the best that Broadway has to offer in the way of new material this year, it seems I won't be missing a whole lot by staying here in LA for the theatrical premiere season.

Though the three performers featured in the show are clearly very skilled in their craft, I doubt anyone can bring real heart into such empty characters. None of them were particularly likable - one zany, one slutty, one downright boring. Was the play this vapid as well? It's a wonder to me that it lasted so many years off-Broadway, if so.

There were perhaps one or two somewhat memorable songs, but these didn't make up for the utter lack of charm and sincerity looming over the show. I kept waiting for something to happen, for some tremendous crescendo in the plot line, yet that moment never came. Aside from this, there were holes in the script that left many questions unanswered, but in a wholly unsatisfying way without any apparent purpose or intent.

I've given it two stars because it certainly wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen and the performers were very talented both vocally and dramatically, but I'm afraid that this is due to be another over hyped Broadway flop. Where's another "Light in the Piazza" (a show with innovative music AND charm in spades) when you need one?

The primary question that one needs to ask with this show with a cast of THREE is if it's worth the price. Putting this show within the context of having 100+ theatre choices any weekend with ticket offerings in GoldStar as low as $15 per person, I have to say that this show is cute and entertaining but certainly not worth the $80 I paid for two tickets. I did feel somewhat let down because I have come to expect greatness from the Pasadena Playhouse where I saw amazing shows like "Sister Act" and "Ray Charles", which had large casts averaging 30 actors on stage. The rows of empty seats clearly showed that people who know their theatre are not showing up.

Well, in 1978 I saw the play VANITIES as I was graduating High School. Somehow, I am now in my forties! The first problem we have here is that it no longer using the VANITIES, which was so much a part of the show. Seeing their transformation, putting on the makeup and the wigs. It just doesn't make sense that they don't utilize that. Another problem is that all the songs tell us what is going on, but don't show us (although they are catchy and fun!) . It just adds up to nothing and by the end and you think, why not just revive VANITIES? It has stripped all the heart and the put in pop tunes. It's short. It's not unbearable. It is just unnecessary. This will be next years A CATERED AFFAIR on Broadway. Another show that was not necessary, but at least this one has a dynamite cast. The cast is fantastic. Fantastic.
