This award-winning rock musical recounts the tale of an everyday suburban family trying to cope with the mom's bipolar condition, which has her fluctuating between sanity and madness. The score, by composer Tom Kitt and lyricist/book writer Brian Yorkey, features 30 original songs including "Just Another Day," "You Don't Know" and "Superboy and the Invisible Girl." Next to Normal was praised in its Broadway run as "much more than a feel-good musical; it is a feel-everything musical" by The New York Times.

I expected a "downer" of a story, and this wasn't the case. The music was beautiful but you really have to concentrate on the words because they are an integral part of the dialogue that moves the story along. My only complaint was that the stage needed better miking, as the actors were frequently difficult to hear.

Outstanding! This play tells the story of how each member of a family struggles with mental illness through profoundly meaningful lyrics and emotive music. The play is truthful. There is no sentimentality, no simplistic characterizations, just authentic, complex relationships .
