Written on Oct 08 2012I expected a "downer" of a story, and this wasn't the case. The music was beautiful but you really have to concentrate on the words because they are an integral part of the dialogue that moves the story along. My only complaint was that the stage needed better miking, as the actors were frequently difficult to hear.
Written on Oct 08 2012The cast were all incredibly talented and enjoyable to watch. The set and use of technology was very fitting for the show and made the experience truly excellent!
Written on Oct 08 2012Arden Theatre company is a Philadelphia treasure, and Next to Normal lives up to high expectations.
Written on Oct 08 2012Outstanding! This play tells the story of how each member of a family struggles with mental illness through profoundly meaningful lyrics and emotive music. The play is truthful. There is no sentimentality, no simplistic characterizations, just authentic, complex relationships .
