The stuffy Elomire and the foppish Valere struggle for power in a royal court-sponsored theater troupe in the hit comedy La Bête. Arden favorite Scott Greer, one of Philadelphia's most gifted comedic actors, plays the starring role in this revival and award-winning director Emmanuelle Delpech takes the helm. A modern comedy written in iambic pentameter, the plot was inspired by real-life 17th-century French playwright and actor Molière. The luxurious set built at the new Hamilton Center told you that the black inhabitants were very rich and thus capable of highly intellectual conversation. But it was really black people playing the pseudo-Kennedys on Martha Vineyard. Although they were rich they had all the black tradition's and problems. The playwright bought forth every &all gripes of blacks in a pseudo-sophisticated way. Well acted but a phony premise to me.

There are some combustible issues here, but the play only hits them head-on in the last 15 minutes of each act, during which (to continue the metaphor) it briefly ignites. As for the rest, the playwright settles for "a vacation with the...continued
