Praised as "raucous, funny and unexpectedly touching" by The New York Times during its off-Broadway run, A Small Fire follows John and Emily Bridges, a long-married couple whose happy, middle-class lives are upended when Emily is overcome by a mysterious, debilitating disease. As this once self-assured and successful woman's senses are slowly stripped away -- smell, taste, sight -- she finds herself suddenly and completely dependent on the husband whose endless devotions she's always taken for granted. This is a fascinating and thought-provoking play with a fine cast. Tom Bloom is especially effective, giving a subtle and moving performance as a man desperately trying to keep his dignity and provide care and comfort to his family as his wife loses her faculties and his world crumbles about him. Highly recommended.
