Sometimes the most profound way to talk about important issues is to sing about them -- just ask composers like Puccini or Wagner who weaved contemporary concerns throughout their seemingly "ageless" works. The Canticle of the Black Madonna is the latest entry in the great tradition of operas that explore challenging issues with breathlessly beautiful music. Set in Louisiana in 2010, The Canticle chronicles an American soldier's return to his wife and home -- where he confronts not only the Gulf oil spill, but the equally profound consequences of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Lush and stirring, the beautifully-staged production ultimately confirms the healing power of love. Portland's Newmark Theatre will host the world premiere of this superb new opera (in English) from composer Ethan Gans-Morse and librettist Tiziana DellaRovere. Learn More
