This ingenious comic stage adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock's thriller The 39 Steps turns a cast of four into more than 100 zany characters (in 100 minutes) with a mix of Hitchcockian masterpiece, juicy spy novel and a touch of Monty Python. The winner of two Tony and Drama Desk Awards, The 39 Steps is a fast-paced and funny whodunit that's brimming with action and romance. Accused of a murder he didn't commit, Richard Hannay flees from the authorities and encounters a string of hair-raising adventures -- as well as an unlikely love connection. Gasp and guffaw as four talented actors re-enact the entire film (including every train chase, plane crash and murder), gleefully portraying the many spies, villains and other intriguing characters that inhabit this action-packed world. Race is a fine play. I'm a big fan of David Mamet's work and don't remember ever having been disappointed.
As to this production - The intimate venue was perfect for this play. It's only scene is set in the law library / conference room of a small law firm. The nature of the playhouse brought me right into that room. I suspect that it worked to that effect for many in the audience.
The set itself was very nicely presented and scene changes were brilliantly executed.
The cast - - ah -- the cast. Wonderful! Really strong where it had to be strong. A shame the "client" couldn't have been a more effective bad guy.

When it comes to race is justice blind?
In this complex, complicated world acknowledging prejudice is an ugly venture into discomfort. In Race, three lawyers (two black, one white) take on a case that gets under the skin and turns into a minefield of deep divisions, resentments and bigotry. Mamet’s rapid-fire dialogue, gripping plot and blunt language, thoroughly stripped of polite social convention and rife with provocative humor, spotlights how discrimination is stained with guilt and shame. Playwright David Mamet is a Pulitzer Prize-winning and Academy Award-nominated writer.
