An absurdist tragicomedy originally published in 1960, The Caretaker was Nobel Prize-winning writer Harold Pinter's first major success. Frequently likened to Samuel Beckett's classic Waiting for Godot, The Caretaker revolves around the mentally challenged Aston, the fast-talking tramp he invites to stay with him, and Mick (Aston's younger brother, housemate and caretaker). The Caretaker stands as a prime example of Pinter's masterful ability to mix darkness, humor and humanity. For this Imago Theatre production, Jerry Mouawad directs Allen Nause in the lead role. Race is a fine play. I'm a big fan of David Mamet's work and don't remember ever having been disappointed.
As to this production - The intimate venue was perfect for this play. It's only scene is set in the law library / conference room of a small law firm. The nature of the playhouse brought me right into that room. I suspect that it worked to that effect for many in the audience.
The set itself was very nicely presented and scene changes were brilliantly executed.
The cast - - ah -- the cast. Wonderful! Really strong where it had to be strong. A shame the "client" couldn't have been a more effective bad guy.

When it comes to race is justice blind?
In this complex, complicated world acknowledging prejudice is an ugly venture into discomfort. In Race, three lawyers (two black, one white) take on a case that gets under the skin and turns into a minefield of deep divisions, resentments and bigotry. Mamet’s rapid-fire dialogue, gripping plot and blunt language, thoroughly stripped of polite social convention and rife with provocative humor, spotlights how discrimination is stained with guilt and shame. Playwright David Mamet is a Pulitzer Prize-winning and Academy Award-nominated writer.
