Winner of the 2004 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, Intimate Apparel tells the story of Esther, a middle-aged, African-American seamstress in turn-of-the-20th-century New York City who has learned to make ends meet by sewing lingerie. After decades of loneliness, Esther finds solace in letters from George, a handsome, young Caribbean man working on the Panama Canal. Enlivened by this potential romance, Esther relies on two of her patrons -- a rich white socialite and a prostitute -- to help her compose letters to George. Intimate Apparel was written by Lynn Nottage, winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Ruined, and this Artists Repertory Theatre production marks the play's long-awaited Portland premiere. Learn More

The intimacy and immediacy of our work is enhanced by our on-stage homes — two off-Broadway-sized, sleek, and comfortable theaters. Our theaters are also the artistic home of our four-member Resident Acting Company — actors who will be appearing throughout the season.
