First staged in 1971, Holy Ghosts peers inside the close-knit confines of a small fundamentalist church in deep Appalachia -- a favorite setting for noted late playwright Romulus Linney (Sand Mountain, Gint, Heathen Valley). The action centers on a man named Coleman (accompanied by his charming lawyer) chasing after Nancy, the wife who has deserted him and taken up with preacher Obediah Buckthorn and the Amalgamation Holiness Church of God. The characters and rituals the men uncover among the congregation are so odd, interesting -- and oddly appealing -- that suddenly any outcome seems possible. Beth Harper directs this Portland Actors Conservatory production at Firehouse Theatre.

Great acting and very thought provoking. Only 2 criticisms...the ever present pillar that blocks view. Also, because I ordered thru Goldstar, the 3 of us were not allowed to sit together which was a strong negative for me. I see no need to do this if we arrive in plenty of time. First come first served is how it should be no matter what price one pays. Why do you do this?

Quenched my atheist's thirst with the Linney's long awaited play about unceremonious intrusion of a religion into peoples lives. Felt like sitting in a church on a sunday afternoon. Actors were great; skillfull and motivated. Why would I go to a movie theater and pay double when I can get to see so many wonderful actors at the Firehouse Theater.
