Sometimes the most profound way to talk about important issues is to sing about them -- just ask composers like Puccini or Wagner who weaved contemporary concerns throughout their seemingly "ageless" works. The Canticle of the Black Madonna is the latest entry in the great tradition of operas that explore challenging issues with breathlessly beautiful music. Set in Louisiana in 2010, The Canticle chronicles an American soldier's return to his wife and home -- where he confronts not only the Gulf oil spill, but the equally profound consequences of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Lush and stirring, the beautifully-staged production ultimately confirms the healing power of love. Portland's Newmark Theatre will host the world premiere of this superb new opera (in English) from composer Ethan Gans-Morse and librettist Tiziana DellaRovere. Learn More
Marley’s Ghost, a virtuoso aggregation composed of singer/multi-instrumentalists Dan Wheetman, Jon Wilcox, Mike Phelan, Ed Littlefield Jr. and Jerry Fletcher, celebrates its 25th anniversary with the scintillating roots-music tour de force Jubilee.
The album, produced by legendary Nashville cat Cowboy Jack Clement and recorded at the city’s venerable Sound Emporium, which Clement built, features guest performances from Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Old Crow Medicine Show, Marty Stuart, Larry Campbell, Byron House and Don Heffington.
Royal Wood’s career has been established with critical acclaim and impressive musical achievements.
His latest release We Were Born to Glory debuted in the Top 25 charts in Canada and was recently nominated for “Adult Alternative Album of the Year” at the 2013 Juno Awards. The single “ I Want Your Love” reached No. 1 on the CBC Radio 2 charts for three solid weeks, and remained in the Top 20 for 14 weeks straight. His videos for “Not Giving Up” and “The Glory” both found heavy rotation on Much Music.
His music has been used in several TV and Film productions, including major TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and Being Human.
A 2011 Juno nominee for Songwriter of the Year, a past recipient of the iTunes’ Songwriter of the Year, and finalist in the “International Songwriting Competition”, Royal has been asked to co-write with such notable artists as Randy Bachman (BTO, Guess Who), Colin James and Wayne Petti (Cuff the Duke).
