The emotionally powerful saga of an everyday suburban family's battle with the mother's mental illness was a smash on Broadway, winning three Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize and major critical acclaim. The score by composer Tom Kitt and lyricist/book writer Brian Yorkey features 30 original songs including "Just Another Day," "You Don't Know" and "Superboy and the Invisible Girl." Praised in its Broadway version as "much more than a feel-good musical; it is a feel-everything musical" by the New York Times, the production stars Susannah Mars in the lead for this regional premiere.

Ten Chimneys: New Comedy Filled With Theater Lore

Full Price:
$36.00

For decades, Broadway legends Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne were known for their lavish parties at their palatial retreat, Ten Chimneys. The most influential artists of the time were entertained there, and Lunt and Fontanne were the center of attention. But when young actress Uta Hagen arrives to rehearse the Lunts' latest production, she sparks an offstage love triangle rivaling the most intense onstage dramas. Engaging and hilarious, Ten Chimneys is a comically revealing take on the private lives of these very public figures. Artists Repertory Theatre's incoming Artistic Director Damaso Rodriguez, making his Portland debut, directs this West Coast premiere from playwright and screenwriter Jeffrey Hatcher (Stage Beauty, Three Viewings, The Duchess). I had never heard of this musical, and it is really powerful and personal. A phenomenal effort by the cast (especially the mother and son roles), enhanced with the intimacy of the Alder stage. My only complaint is that the sound mix from the wonderful on-stage musicians was too loud, obscuring some of the actor's (singing) lines.

Very Good show. Serious subject matter, and seriously good.
Every actor shined.
