A boisterous and uplifting portrait of love in a nontraditional family, La Cage aux Folles has been one of Broadway's biggest hits for 30 years, winning numerous Tony Awards. Georges and Albin, a gay couple who run and star in a popular drag show, find their domestic peace shattered when their son brings his prospective in-laws home to meet the folks. The would-be father-in-law happens to be the head of a conservative party that wants to shut down the drag show. The lively and glittering spectacle that ensues celebrates family values, unconditional love and, above all, the need to be proud of who we are. The show, which was adapted into the popular movie The Birdcage starring Robin Williams, features gorgeous costumes, fabulous dance numbers and a wonderful Jerry Herman score, including "The Best of Times" and "I Am What I Am." I thought it a most extraordinary opera. So creative and deep. I loved it all: the libretto, the music that didn't necessarily guide the singers, the dissonance in the duets of the angels, the angels themselves, the Black Madonna, the Greek chorus in masks, the play-like intensity of mostly just recitativ (so well acted, too), the interlocking themes of war and environmental destruction - both for oil. I valued the racial diversity and the subtext of strong African American characters helping White characters in community - that experience reflected in art is needed in our world and country.
It just doesn't get better than this.
