Winner of the 2004 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, Intimate Apparel tells the story of Esther, a middle-aged, African-American seamstress in turn-of-the-20th-century New York City who has learned to make ends meet by sewing lingerie. After decades of loneliness, Esther finds solace in letters from George, a handsome, young Caribbean man working on the Panama Canal. Enlivened by this potential romance, Esther relies on two of her patrons -- a rich white socialite and a prostitute -- to help her compose letters to George. Intimate Apparel was written by Lynn Nottage, winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Ruined, and this Artists Repertory Theatre production marks the play's long-awaited Portland premiere. Learn More

By Anton Chekhov, Adapted by Richard Kramer
Directed By Jon Kretzu
Director Jon Kretzu, who has been working with Kramer for years on this project, describes this adaptation as “ghostlike and ethereal,” and not a traditional treatment of this play. The story’s themes of the rising bourgeois and the fall of aristocracy are explored but Kramer has taken much liberty with the play’s dialogue and character development.
Richard Kramer is a writer for both television and the stage. He has been a writer and producer for the television series _thirtysomething, My So-Called Life _and Judging Amy. His play Theater District was produced by Artists Rep in 2006
