Singing, dancing, juggling, caroling, storytelling and more will fill the historic Alberta Rose Theatre's stage as Magical Strings performs its Celtic Yuletide Concert. A grand gala of Celtic-inspired holiday music, this annual tradition features three generations of the multi-talented Boulding family -- playing Celtic harps, hammered dulcimers, violins, cello, whistles, concertina and percussion -- along with special guests. There's even opportunity for audience participation, as spectators are invited to don a costume, follow a processional through the aisles and join in for some caroling. For this performance, Magical Strings will be joined by the award-winning Tara Academy Irish Dancers, vocalist Colleen Raney, Canadian fiddler Jocelyn Pettit and other special guests. Learn More

I enjoyed the new and different acts fro outside the usual Portland circles. I also appreciated the departure of the burlesque reviews and stripper type stuff. Moving to Friday Sunday Sunday also helped as friends complained last year that 3 nights in a row was tiresome.
Festival Show Lineup:
Friday April 19, 2013 — The Wanderlust Circus Orchestra (Portland)
The Wanderlust Circus Orchestra is the house band for Portland's proudest bohemian brigade, Wanderlust Circus. Their music crashes and reels like a calliope freight train off the rails; weaving miraculous feats of skill through the extravagant orchestral warp of our live novelty band; featuring members of 3 Leg Torso, Vagabond Opera, Chervona, and The Shanghai Woolies. Tap-dancing sax king Shoehorn is featured alongside saucy songbird Anna Leander and frenetic frontman William Batty, sweating and sighing through standards and originals in the Spike Jones fashion; while the finest acrobats, aerialists, and vaudevillian virtuosi in the Pacific Wheel Circuit show off their explosive best. Bring grandma and the kids — all are welcome at the font of joyous panic.
Saturday April 20, 2013 — Avner the Eccentric (Maine): Exceptions to Gravity
A rare opportunity to see a living legend of physical comedy. Avner's one-man show has been a big hit on Broadway and has toured all over the world. His intensive workshops are equally renowned, passing on his mastery of movement and character to a generation of performers.
Sunday April 21, 2013 Matinee — Flyin’ Bob (Canada), Kevin Brooking (Belgium), Summer Shapiro (New York), Dave Clay (Los Angeles), Brittany Walsh (Portland)
Kevin Brooking’s Comedy of Accidents just flew in from his headquarters in Belgium. Crazy Juggler Flyin’ Bob hails from Alberta, Canada. Summer Shapiro splits her time between New York and San Francisco. Iconoclastic comedy juggler Dave Clay lives on the road, performing solo and with hilarious troupe Handsome Little Devils. Along with Portland’s own queen of acrobats, Brittany Walsh, they offer a travelogue of comedy and strange tricks.
Sunday April 21, 2013 Evening — Women of the Big Top: Summer Shapiro’s In the Boudoir
Button Wagon, refined physical circus theater (New York), Libertine Belles (Portland), Mildred Hodittle (Oregon), Brittany Walsh (Portland) New York’s master comedienne Summer Shapiro tells a story of a young woman’s love life — In the Boudoir — and its collision with the audience. Mildred Hodittle comes from a twisted 1950s world where all is turquoise. Portland’s own Libertine Belles deliver hot close-harmony swing a la The Andrews Sisters, and hand balancer Brittany Walsh rounds out a night of modern comic vaudeville.
Friday April 26, 2013 — The Button Wagon (New Mexico), Kazum with Trashcan Joe (Portland), Leapin’ Louie (Portland)
The second weekend of Umbrella opens with the surreal and inspired Button Wagon, combining contortion and object manipulation with a pantomime romance set in “an unlikely setting of enlarged sewing implements and a dapper burlap rabbit.” Joining them is a uniquely Portlandic coupling of acrobat troupe Kazum with musical upcyclers Trashcan Joe, and a solo exhibition from trick-roping cowboy clown and UmbrellaFest artistic director Leapin’ Louie Lichtenstein.
Sunday April 28, 2013 Matinee — Jeff Martin (Los Angeles), Rhys Thomas and Charlie Brown (Portland), Shoehorn (Portland)
Rhys Thomas and Charlie Brown are juggling and comedy aristocracy in the Northwest and the world at large. Together, they’ll host a matinee revue your whole family will enjoy. Renowned stage magician Jeff Martin and tap-dancing saxophone king Shoehorn top the bill, along with short bits from other festival favorites.
Sunday April 28, 2013 Evening — The New Eccentrics (San Francisco), Laura Stokes of Ricochet (New Mexico), Faeble Kievman (San Francisco), Bellini Twins (Portland)
The Portland Umbrella Festival comes to a grand close as radical vaudevillian Jasper Patterson brings his New Eccentrics show to Portland. Aerial contortionist Laura Stokes of Ricochet and master buffon Faeble Kievman of Cirque En Deroute take a break from their own globe-hopping adventures to deliver solo works. And Portland comedy favorites The Bellini Twins send us off to Corvallis for Weekend #3!
