The Potomac Theatre Company presents a classic Agatha Christie mystery. Adapted from Christie's novel Death on the Nile, which was also a 1978 film starring Bette Davis, Mia Farrow and Angela Lansbury, Murder on the Nile is the story of a murder aboard a luxury steamer as it travels up the Nile River. Having thrown over his former lover Jacqueline, Simon Mostyn has recently married rich Kay Ridgeway. They're on their honeymoon on the ship, along with a cast of characters that includes Kay's maid, her guardian (Canon Pennefather), a German doctor, a mean rich old woman and her niece, a young socialist, and Simon's ex, Jacqueline. Enraged with jealousy, Jacqueline shoots at Simon and wounds him in the knee, and a few moments later, Kay is found dead in her bunk. Suspicion hangs tense in the air as each member of the group is revealed to have skeletons in the closet. It's Canon Pennefather who puts the pieces together and finally reveals the murderer as the boat reaches its destination.

I liked it but my wife would rate it that she loved it. She was a big Agatha Christie fan who read a lot of her books and she was very excited about going to the play. She said it did not disappoint. The actors were very impressive, especially if only amateur or avocational actors.

This show did not measure up to Potomac Theatre Company's usual excellence reflected in the recent Music Man.

One of the actors blasted out his lines so loud that it was like he wanted to be heard in the White House. Casting a sixth-grade girl as mature Frendch maid was peculiar. While she acted well and spoke with a good French accent, it was strange seeing a little girl as an adult among real adults. The Captain/Waiter spent much time mixing drink orders but served the customers empty glasses-- very distracting! It was a disappointing evening.
