Champion eeler and star intertidal tour guide Kirk Lombard leads an entertaining and educational low-tide foraging expedition along the San Mateo county shoreline (near Halfmoon Bay). During this three-hour early morning outing, see a vast intertidal smorgasbord of shellfish (clams, limpets, rock crabs, goose barnacles, mussels), fish (monkeyface eels, grass rock fish, cabezon), seaweed (bull kelp, rock weed, nori, sea lettuce) and various other creatures. During the winter and spring the tour will focus on the mudflats: hunting the giant horseneck clam, how to "read" a mudflat, and how to safely forage for mussels and limpets. This class is a mix of "how-to" info, regulations, sustainability, ecology, and more.

* Additional fees apply.

Loved it! Great for all ages, family friendly. Very educational. If Kirk does not change his style and venue, you are almost guaranteed to have a great time. Goldstar's ticket value was great. Wear rubber boots and dress warm! Parking is limited unless you want to walk from a distant lot, so arrive early to get a good spot. Don't forget camera. Have a great time!

If you have any interest at all in the sea or where your food comes from, this is a great tour to take. Kirk is full of knowledge and is ready to share it! Make sure to wear boots or shoes with excellent soles as you're climbing around tide pools.

It was so great to finally meet Kirk in person. He is as enthusiastic about sea foraging in person as he is online! We've been following his blog for some time now.

Very entertaining and opens some new doors for beach "clamming" activities we haven't enjoyed before. Kirk and his sidekick Mike were
engaging and funny during the messy digging and scrounging. Afterwards the nearby restaurants provided the seafood that we were chasing.

This is a safer activity for grown-ups than little kids that need watching on the slippery rocks near the ocean surf.

Description

This three-hour intertidal foraging expedition will blow your mind!

These tours are scheduled at the lowest of low tides so you will be sure to see a vast intertidal smorgasbord of shellfish, (clams, limpets, rock crabs, goose barnacles, mussels) fish (monkeyface eels, grass rock fish, cabezon) and sea weeds (bull kelp, rock weed, nori, sea lettuce) and various other creatures! This class is a mix of "how-to" info, regulations, sustainability, ecology, and more.  Though you won't be able to forage for yourself on this tour, Kirk can give away anything that he catches and gathers -- potentially quite a lot of stuff!

Please be advised to follow the written directions to this event. The physical address is not the actual meeting place for the tour.
