Champion eeler and star intertidal tour guide Kirk Lombard leads an entertaining and educational low-tide foraging class along the San Mateo county shoreline (near Halfmoon Bay). During this three-hour early morning outing, see a vast intertidal smorgasbord of shellfish (clams, limpets, rock crabs, goose barnacles, mussels), fish (monkeyface eels, grass rock fish, cabezon), seaweed (bull kelp, rock weed, nori, sea lettuce) and various other creatures. During the winter and spring the tour will focus on the mudflats: hunting the giant horseneck clam, how to "read" a mudflat, and how to safely forage for mussels and limpets. This class is a mix of "how-to" info, regulations, sustainability, ecology, and more.

At times, Kirk exhibits the enthusiasm and excitement of a 4-year old kid on their first visit to the shore...it was easy to get caught up in the fun, especially with the wealth of knowledge (biological, ecological, and legal) he brings to this thoroughly enjoyable 3+ hour adventure. Boots required! A towel at the car is also a good idea.

This was a great way to do something different for my birthday. If not for this tour, I would never have been at the beach at 7AM and it was beautiful. We learned so much about a place I have been dozens of times before. I will never simply walk on the beach the same again, now that I know about the wonders that exist below the sand and on the shores. Thanks Kirk for emphasizing the ecological pitfalls of foraging and teaching us about sustainability.

Fabulous afternoon with a thoroughly engaging, enthusiastic seafood forager. We learned a great deal, were amazed by Kirk's wealth of knowledge, and came home with the most delish mussels (think wine, shallots, and garlic) and a rock fish (with ginger teriyaki dipping sauce). I CAN gather mussels, clams, seaweed and fish now; so can you!

Description

This three-hour intertidal foraging expedition will blow your mind!

These tours are scheduled at the lowest of low tides so you will be sure to see a vast intertidal smorgasbord of shellfish, (clams, limpets, rock crabs, goose barnacles, mussels) fish (monkeyface eels, grass rock fish, cabezon) and sea weeds (bull kelp, rock weed, nori, sea lettuce) and various other creatures! This class is a mix of "how-to" info, regulations, sustainability, ecology, and more.  Though you won't be able to forage for yourself on this tour, Kirk can give away anything that he catches and gathers -- potentially quite a lot of stuff!
