One of the funniest musicals ever written, Stephen Sondheim's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum comes to the Renton Civic Theatre. Sondheim, along with writers Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, combines plot elements from the comedies of ancient Roman playwright Plautus with the high-spirited antics of Vaudeville for a wild and witty farce set in the ancient city. In exchange for his freedom, a crafty slave sets out to woo a beautiful (but not too bright) courtesan for his young master. Bawdy puns, mistaken identities, and sly social commentary (not to mention Sondheim's classic songs) garnered this Broadway hit multiple Tony awards and a subsequent film adaptation starring Zero Mostel. Description
Here is Rydell High’s senior class of 1959: duck–tailed, hot–rodding “Burger Palace Boys” and their gum–snapping, hip–shaking “Pink Ladies” in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head “Greaser” Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their “Summer Nights” as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as “Greased Lightning”, “It’s Raining on Prom Night”, and “Alone at the Drive–In Movie”, recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation.
