Sondheim Classic A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

Full Price:
$25.00
Our Price:

One of the funniest musicals ever written, Stephen Sondheim's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum comes to the Renton Civic Theatre. Sondheim, along with writers Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, combines plot elements from the comedies of ancient Roman playwright Plautus with the high-spirited antics of Vaudeville for a wild and witty farce set in the ancient city. In exchange for his freedom, a crafty slave sets out to woo a beautiful (but not too bright) courtesan for his young master. Bawdy puns, mistaken identities, and sly social commentary (not to mention Sondheim's classic songs) garnered this Broadway hit multiple Tony awards and a subsequent film adaptation starring Zero Mostel. My family and I really enjoyed this show. It was the first time we saw Grease on stage and it provided a bit more context than the movie.

Fantastic local production, great performances for a local company. There was only one performer whose singing was weak but totally made up for in acting skill and presence on stage. Had a wonderful time and really enjoyed going back to Rydell High! Thanks for a wonderful night!

The show was great overall. If you go expecting to see a live version of the movie, you may be slightly disappointed. There were definitely some stand-out voices and characters in the cast. Our favorites were Sandy, Doody, Eugene and Rump. Also, Kenickie was nearly perfect in the voice and the attitude as compared to the movie. We would definitely go again. The only part that was moderately disappointing was that they didn't sing "Grease". Regardless, still worth our drive.

The singing and dancing were very good. However, there was so much unnecessary "gutter" language & suggestive body movements, none of which did anything to enhance or improve the play.
The play would have been so much more enjoyable without these irritating distractions.

Loved the venue. The cast was super, especially as a group. The overall performance was great, through there were no stand-out performers for me.

The singing, acting, and music were all OUTSTANDING the venue is perfect size, the only damper was Sandy using the "F" word at the end.

Description

Here is Rydell High’s senior class of 1959: duck–tailed, hot–rodding “Burger Palace Boys” and their gum–snapping, hip–shaking “Pink Ladies” in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head “Greaser” Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their “Summer Nights” as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as “Greased Lightning”, “It’s Raining on Prom Night”, and “Alone at the Drive–In Movie”, recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation.
